The combination contact drum/platen sanding head shares a single belt but has a flat platen behind the contact drum. It can be operated in 3 modes: 1>Drum only. 2>Platen only. 3>Drum and platen in tandem. Thus, it can produce the characteristics of either the aforementioned drum or platen heads or a combination thereof. The combination head is usually furnished on single head sanders, but can be furnished as one head of a multi-head sander.

The combination head sander can be operated in 3 modes: platen up,platen down or platen level with the drum.
With the platen up
(1) the sander functions as a drum only machine: for sizing with a 36 to 150 grit belt. With the platen head in level position
(2) with the drum, intermediate and final finishing is possible: for example,using a grit sequence of 80, 150 and 220. The platen only.
(3) mode(platen below drum)is frequently used for sanding repairs,mars or lacquer seals with fine (280-600)grits. |
